Calgary Hospitality And Match Play Sections

C.H.A.M.P.S is a Calgary Ladies Golf Association event, which recognizes the social aspect of the game and stresses hospitality not competition. This is a very social fun day that includes a luncheon and we encourage you to consider participating.

C.H.A.M.P.S is an interclub team match play event which is a round-robin schedule of games between participating clubs. The matches begin in May and end in August with a wind-up tournament hosted by a member club each September. There is no entry fee to play in this event. Each member club determines its own team selection method by which it sends a four (4) player team, to either host a match or play an 'away' game. There are annual trophies awarded in both the "A" and "B" index factor divisions. Currently 24 clubs are involved in CHAMPS.

RILEY'S LADIES' MATCH PLAY - BEST BALL

This tournament began in 1985 when it was known as the Marnier Classic. The first sponsor was the Alberta distributor for Grand Marnier Liqueur, Tom Marion. From 1985 the tournament was organized by Diane Williams and Shirley Watson. In 1993 a new sponsor was needed and Riley’s owned by Gerry Sparks and under the guidance of Bill Creighton, took over sponsorship and Keren Howard joined the committee. Riley's had been supporting the men's best ball tournament for 10 years before that, and the ladies simply joined them for the finals of both the tournaments at Canyon Meadows Golf Club. In 1997 Shirley Watson retired from the committee and Lyn McKeeman took her place

This event is open to lady and junior lady members of the Calgary Ladies Golf Association who have a handicap factor of 12 or less. The entry fee for the entire series is $20.00. Each tournament event is open to a maximum of 20 entrants. Qualification will be made based on the twenty lowest handicap factor members being chosen. Any player can play in all events as long as they qualify. Lady or junior members who have handicap factors higher than 12, will be accepted if the tournament is not filled by members with handicap factors of 12 or less.

Once the 20 lowest members are selected, an email will be sent to the members with the draw for the tournament. Members who do not qualify will be contacted by phone or email. If you need further information please contact Sandy or Candy.

PRESENT FORMAT

The Medalist Series now operates with a five year rotation plan and each member club of the Association donates five tee times (20 players) for the series. This means that with all clubs participating, each course only donates five tee times once every five years.

Two coordinators from the regular players in the series volunteer to organize the events each year and report annually to the executive of the Calgary Ladies Golf Association. For each event players phone the coordinators one week prior to the event stating their current handicap factor. Maximum factor is 12.0 and the twenty players with the lowest factors will compete.

The host course need only provide the five tee times for the date they have agreed upon. The coordinators phone in the five groupings several days ahead and organize and look after all aspects of the event. As a small thank you, the limited funds of the series are pooled at year's end and equally divided among the six hosting clubs in the form of vouchers from the pro shops. At the end of the season these vouchers are used for the prizes awarded for low gross as well as in several skill areas.

Tournament of Champions

It was felt in 1984 that a tournament which would bring together the lady club champions of all the private and public courses in Calgary would be an excellent way in which to honor the memory of one of the great ladies of golf in our city, Harriett Watson.

The first Tournament of Champions was held in 1984, organized and sponsored by Shirley Bacon, Diane Williams, Lea McBean, Diane Lambert
, and Aubrey Edwards.
Canyon Meadows hosted the tournament for the first 8 years thanks to the generosity of club manager Jay Jenkins, along with the Board of Directors of Canyon Meadows. Diane Williams was the tournament chairperson during this time. In 1992 the tournament was taken over by the Calgary Ladies Golf Association.
